about the farm –
Quinta de São Jacinto is entering its third year of operation. We have a ½-acre market garden producing vegetables for the local community, 2 hectares of grapes for wine, 200 olive trees for oil, multiple varieties of fruit trees, a propagation greenhouse, laying hens, and educational programs. We are also currently building out perennial fruit and vegetable fields, a compost operation, and a preservation kitchen.
who this is for –
The internship will be at the heart of the operation, and the intern's ability to work and learn is one of the most important factors for success this season. This opportunity is not suitable for someone who just wants to exchange time for money and housing. It is for someone who sees themselves developing in sustainable agriculture, is eager to learn, excited about market farming, and willing to work hard day in day out — in any weather and sometimes irregular hours.
The work can be demanding and expectations are high. But it is also deeply rewarding, full of meaning, and — at least for me — a beautiful lifestyle I wouldn't replace with anything else.
If you see your future in market farming and regenerative agriculture and can commit to a full season of hard and rewarding work, you might be our person for 2027.
framework –
- 5 working days a week, 9-hour days — start and finish times vary with the season.
- Once every two weeks: an attendance shift on off-days (morning observations, collect eggs, check irrigation).
- Accommodation in a shared workers/interns house — your own room on the farm.
- Food allowance of €6 per working day, added to your paycheck. Interns also benefit from farm produce, and we sometimes share lunch.
- The season starts in December 2026 or January 2027 and ends in November or December 2027. Dates are flexible for the right candidate, but commitment to the full season is required.
requirements –
- Ability to work independently with discipline.
- Hands-on work: maintenance, harvesting, washing, packaging, deliveries, market stand setup, cleaning.
- Flexibility across diverse farm operations — market garden, composting, animal care, driving, general upkeep.
- A genuine desire to learn and contribute with joy and curiosity.
- Good English required. Portuguese is an advantage.
- European citizenship, residency, or valid visa required (NIF + NISS).
terms –
- Accommodation in a shared workers house on the farm.
- Monthly salary of €1,350 on an official Portuguese paycheck.
- Hands-on experience establishing and running a diverse, productive market farm.
- A beautiful, quiet setting — fruit trees, natural spring pools, a flowing stream.
